The first three editions were organized by the University of Zielona Góra, Poland. The fourth one was the first to be organized outside Poland, by the University of Valencia, Spain. Continuing the experience of fruitful international co-operation in the subject with the view of further extending its scope, DESDes’12 is the first edition of this event to be organized outside Europe, by the São Paulo State University, Brazil. The Workshop is devoted to subjects concerning design, analysis and implementation of discrete-event systems, formal design methodology, digital signal processing and related topics. Scope: The topics to be covered include, but are not limited to: * Artificial Intelligence and Adaptive Systems * Digital Communication Systems * Digital Signal Processing Implementation * Embedded Systems * Formal Methods in Digital Design * Hardware Description Languages * Hardware-Software Co-Design * Logic Controller Design * Microprocessor Systems * Modeling and Control of Biomedical Systems * Petri Net-Based Digital Design * Programmable Logic * Real-Time System Programming * Safety Critical Computer Control Applications * System-on-Chip * UML in Digital Design * Web Engineering in Digital Design Location: It will be held in Campos do Jordão, known as the Brazilian Garden City. It's one of the most charming cities in São Paulo State – Brazil. It is located in a valley at the Mantiqueira mountain range, about 1700 metres above the sea level, in the woods with plane trees, and Brazilian pine trees (araucarias). It is considered the most European among the Brazilian cities for its climate, which is comparable to that of Davos Platz, in Switzerland. The quality of the air in Campos do Jordão has been found to present ozone and oxygen levels superior to those in Chamonix, France. The temperature in Campos do Jordão is mild, and the sun shines almost all the year round. Campos do Jordão is about 170km from São Paulo city, and about 300km from Rio de Janeiro. It is fairly easy to reach Campos do Jordão either from São Paulo or from Rio de Janeiro international airports. Part of the trip is done through expressways, and as it approaches Campos do Jordão a good mountain road reaches the city. Submission Details: The authors are asked to submit, with their full papers, information: * Paper Title * Author(s)' Name(s) * Contact Address & Email * Abstract (150-200 words) * Keyword list Submissions: The submission of full papers with up to 6 pages is invited. They should address topics as outlined above and focus on insights and lessons gained from recent researches and practical experiences. Position papers describing new ideas, promising approaches, and work in progress are considered particularly appropriate. These papers should outline the contribution that the authors intend to make at the Workshop. The papers need to be submitted as PDF files (according to the IFAC Authors' Instruction http://www.ifac-control.org/events/information-for-ifac-authors) through our WWW server: http://www.desdes.uz.zgora.pl Final Papers: The final papers must be prepared according to the IFAC Authors' Instruction (http://www.ifac-control.org/events/information-for-ifac-authors). Accepted papers must be presented in person at the Workshop. Correspondence: All correspondence should be addressed to the Workshop address: DESDes@iie.uz.zgora.pl.
